Reflections on Westerjn States 100 mile for 2004.

The last time I ran and finished Western States was in 1979 and I found myself 25 years later going for my second sliver belt buckle. I had started the race in 1999 and 2001 and difficulties in both with mental breakdown in 1999 and injuries in 2001. I knew that the race would be difficult because of my age and my competitive nature of always going hard. I had focused on starting slower and hopefully maintaining my strenghth throughout. The race starts at Squaw Valley and goes up and over Squaw Peak and then heads west on trails to finish in Auburn, California. One thing we did not have in my first race in '79 was the numerous aid stations and great trail markings. We also have great athletic sunglasses today that we did not have in those days. I wore my aruba shades from the start (although we started in the dark, so I wore them on them on top of my head until the sun came up) until it became dark. The sunglasses were fantastic and allowed me to actually pick out things on the trail even in the heavily wooded areas. I wore them constanly and only changed them out at the 25 mile mark and put on the dark shaded ones when the bright sun came out. I did not even realize that I was wearing them as they were very comfortable throughout the day. I was running well for about 15 miles and then ran into a bad patch for about 8 miles and had to tough it out, but was able to get things back together at Robinson Flat and saw my CAK (Chief Ass Kicker) Ziggy Terelak there and it was a mental boost for me. I knew that some of the tough running through the canyons was ahead of me and just had to stay focused. It helped that all the people in the aid stations knew me and kept me motivated. At Foresthill ( 62 miles)I met up with my pacers and it was great to have someone along to keep me moving in the right direction. Fred was a training partner from Reno and so knew my abilities, he was great in motivating me without forcing me to go beyound my limits. The difficult time came after the sun went down and the trail became difficult to see. We could see the trail markings but the difficulty was in seeing the trail surface which really became a problem later in the race. The last 20 miles after crossing the river were my most difficult as I was getting tired and the trail surface was more treachorous. The hardest part was the last miles the first 3 because of the trail which was very rutted from the horses and the last 2 because of the tough hills. I was actually pleased with the results and did get 3 of my goals and left one to maybe go after next year. I was very happy with the support of my family and friends. Marc was fantastic in his support through the sunglasses and positive outlook.
